PAPAYA JUICE.............

Papaya juice

No need to cry about scarcity of blueberries, strawberries, etc in SINGAPORE . We have our wonderful payayas, pineapples and bananas, and durians and mangoes are affordable. Papaya was the only studied food found to halt breast cancer.

Scientists studied 14 plant foods commonly consumed in Mexico to determine their ability to halt breast cancer cell growth. These included avocado, black sapote, fuava, mango, prickly pear cactus (nopal), pineapple, grapes, tomato, and papaya. They also evaluated beta-carotene, total plant phenolics, and gallic acid contents and antioxidant capacity. They found that only papaya had a significant effect on stopping breast cancer cell growth.Papaya is a store-house of cancer fighting lycopene. The intense orangey-pink color of papaya means it is chock full of cancer fighting carotenoids. Not only beta carotene, but lycopene is found in abundance. The construction of lycopene makes it highly reactive toward oxygen and free radicals.Scientists at the University of Illinois think this anti-oxidant activity contributes to its effectiveness as a cancer fighting agent. Epidemiological studies have indicated an inverse relationship between lycopene intake and prostate cancer risk. They showed that oral lycopene is highly bioavailable, accumulates in prostate tissue, and is localized in the nucleus of prostate epithelial cells.

In addition to antioxidant activity, other experiments have indicated that lycopene induces cancer cell death, anti-metastatic activity, and the up-regulation of protective enzymes.

Prostate cancer was the subject of a study in Australia that looked at 130 prostate cancer patients and 274 hospitalized controls. The scientists found that men who consumed the most lycopene-rich fruits and vegetables such as papaya were 82% less likely to have prostate cancer. In this study, green tea also exerted a powerful anti-cancer effect. When lycopene-rich foods were consumed with green tea, the combination was even more effective, an outcome the researchers credited to their synergy.

Isothiocyanates found in papaya restore the cell cycle to eliminate cancer. Organo-sulfur compounds called isothiocyanates are found in papaya. In animal experiments, isothiocyanates protected against cancers of the breast, lung, colon pancreas, and prostate,as well as leukemia, and they have the potential to prevent cancer in humans. Isothiocyanates have shown themselves capable of inhibiting both the formation and development of cancer cells through multiple pathways and mechanisms.

Researchers in Japan clarified the mechanisms of action in a type of isothiocyanate found in papaya known as BITC, that underlies the relationship between cell cycle regulation and appropriate cell death. When cancerous cells die on schedule, they are no longer a problem. The researchers established that BITC exerted cancer cell killing effects that were greater in the proliferating cells than in the quiescent cells. Cancer cells that are proliferating are much more dangerous than cancer cells that are in a state of dormancy.

Enzymes from papaya digest proteins including those that protect tumors. The fruit and other parts of the papaya tree, also known as the paw paw tree, contain papain and chymopapain, powerful proteolytic enzymes that facilitate chemical reactions in the body.
They promote digestion by helping to break down proteins from food into amino acids that can be recombined to produce protein useable by humans. Proteolytic enzymes protect the body from inflammation and help heal burns. They do a good job of digesting unwanted scar tissue both on the skin and under its surface.

Research has shown that the physical and mental health of people is highly dependent on their ability to produce proteins they can use effectively. However, as people age, they produce less of the enzymes needed to effectively digest proteins from food and free needed amino acids. They are left with excessive amounts of undigested protein which can lead to overgrowth of unwanted bacteria in the intestinal tract, and a lack of available amino acids.

Eating papaya after a meal promotes digestion, and helps prevent bloating, gas production, and indigestion. It is quite helpful after antibiotic use to replenish friendly intestinal bacteria that were the casualties in the war against the unwanted bacteria. When the intestinal tract is well populated with friendly bacteria, the immune system is strengthened, and can better protect against flu and cancer.
Being a proteolytic enzyme, papain is able to destroy intestinal parasites, which are composed mostly of protein. To rid the body of intestinal parasites, half a cup of papaya juice can be alternated each hour for twelve consecutive hours with the same amount of cucumber or green bean juice.

Papaya contains fibrin, another useful compound not readily found in the plant kingdom. Fibrin reduces the risk of blood clots and improves the quality of blood cells, optimizing the ability of blood to flow through the circulatory system. Fibrin is also important in preventing stokes. Proteolytic enzymes containing fibrin are a good idea for long plane rides to minimize the potential of blood clots in the legs. People who sit at a desk all day might want to use proteolytic enzymes too.
Proteolytic enzymes are able to digest and destroy the defense shields of viruses, tumors, allergens, yeasts, and various forms of fungus. Once the shield is destroyed, tumors and
invading organisms are extremely vulnerable and easily taken care of by the immune system.

Undigested proteins can penetrate the gut and wind up in the bloodstream where they are treated by the immune system as invaders. If too many undigested proteins are floating around, the immune system becomes overburdened and unable to attend to the other tasks it was meant to do. Proteolytic enzymes can digest these rogue proteins, freeing up the immune system.

Let's ensure a slice of papaya every day in our diet. Papaya juice will be great

SURYA NAMASKAARAM

Surya Namaskar some practical guidelines:
Effective use of Surya Namaskar is experienced on three levels body, mind and intellect. The practice of Surya Namaskar is a sort of training to your body mind and soul (Pradnya). It works with equal force on these three aspects. It gives us physical and mental health with sharp intellect.

Only 35 to 40% of your muscles are used in daily activities. Rest of the muscles remain inactive. Surya Namaskar is a physical exercise where almost 95% to 97% of your muscles are switched on to active mode. They remain active, hours ahead during the day, till you recharge them the next morning.

You are at dis-ease when there is imbalance of Waat, Kapha and Pitta in the body. Daily practice in Surya Namaskar maintains steady state of these three, keeping the body in perfect health.

While performing Surya Namaskar the breathing exercise (Pranayam) gives more oxygen to your lungs. The rhythm of breathing becomes heavy with vitality. Each breath becomes deep and clear. It carries more oxygen to the parts of your body.
The vital points (The Chakras) in the body get charged. The Surya-Tej in these Chakras gets enlightened with the thought and sight of the Sun God.

While performing Surya Namaskar think nothing, but about the Sun God. Concentrate yourself on the meaning of the Surya Mantra, the steps in the Surya Namaskar, their sequence, the proper activities of the different parts of the body, the parts of the body where you feel stress, stretch and strain etc. This will shut your mind off from thinking. Thoughtless state of mind contains no mental stress and strain at all. It is a real rest to your mind. Freedom from mental and emotional anxiety is the sound rest to your body too.

The word Moksha means to be relieved from fear and tears. It is to get freedom from all types of woes and worries. This released state of mind gives you absolute happiness. All the virtues  the divine qualities which are nothing less than the GOD HIMSELF  are the carriers that take you to the absolute happiness-the Moksha.

The starting shloka, the Sankalpa, the prayer, the concluding shloka, the Samarpan and the shloka of dedication are important in the process of know thyself. If you can't (or don't want to) recite these shlokas give a thought to the meaning of each shloka while practicing Surya Namaskar.

Early morning is the best time for Surya Namaskar. Don?t eat any thing at least for five hours prior to Surya Namaskar.

Follow the body postures in each step very scrupulously. If it is not possible for you at the beginning you are free to make some minor changes, here and there, for the time being. But your final aim is to attain the perfect position.

All the diagrams merely indicate only outward body posture roughly. They are not the ideal state of Asana.

Each movement of the Asana should be divided into parts and performed gracefully.

While performing the Asanas keep your belly and hip part loose. Get the feel of the stretch and strain at the particular part of the body. The rest of the body should be free of muscle tension.

Go slow. Slow speed is for SharirShuddhi  for cleansing the body of all sorts of toxins, fats, unwanted secretions and for restoring health. Each movement of the Asana should be graceful. Use all your physical ability to experience the stretch and strain on your body while performing the Asana

There are twelve steps in Surya Namaskar. You can count five seconds for each step of the Surya Namaskar. It means that one Surya Namaskar goes for one minute (and a bit more). This is the normal speed to perform twelve Asana / one Surya Namaskar. This speed ensures SharirVruddhi ? stedy progress in overall health and happiness. At the beginning, of course, you have to go very slow.

The body posture is important. If you have any problem at any step, revise all the given information, about the particular step, in the light of your problem. Your doubt will be solved. Make use of phone / E-mail to get your doubts cleared.

You can gain perfection in the Surya Namaskar after a long and steady practice. Be patient. Maintain slow and steady progress everyday to reach to the right posture of the Asana. Be one with the art. The Sun God will take you to the path of progress.

It is said that twenty-four Surya Namaskar, if done properly, are equal to five hundred sit-ups / pull-ups. It may be a statement of exaggeration. But it is worth to experience the physical fitness that you attain after you start practising Surya Namaskar. At the beginning of the practice, one Surya Namaskar consumes 2.30 KCL. This exercise burns out a lot of calories and reduces body mass and body weight.

If your physical capacity is to perform twelve Surya Namaskar at a time, perform only five. Give importance to use all the physical abilities to perform each and every Asana of Surya Namaskar.

The seven Chakras (the vital points), in your boy govern every of your activity. They motivate you to act, give ability to perform the act and get the action done. Doctors also give prime importance, directly or indirectly, to these vital points while treating a patient. Overall heath and strength is restored through Surya Namaskar.

Persons suffering from slip-disk, arthritis, heart attack etc including pregnant women are suggested to take medical opinion before they start the practice of Surya Namaskar.

If your breathing goes fast while practising Surya Namaskar, either take some rest or stop performing more Surya Namaskar for the day.

After the practice of Surya Namaskar is over you better lay down in Shawasan / Yoga Nidra for some time.

SO, INSTEAD OF GOING TO GYM AND WASTING THE TIME AND MONEY YOU CAN DO THIS ASANA IN YOUR HOME ITSELF. YOU CAN SAVE THE MONEY AND TIME. YOU NEED NOT DO OTHER TOUGHEST EXERCISES AND ASANAS AND ALL. JUST DO SURYA NAMASKAR DAILY. ITS ENOUGH TO LEAD A HEALTHY LIVING ATMOSPHERE...........................

YOGA

                               YOGA

Yoga has been practiced for more than 5,000 years, and currently, close to 11 million Americans are enjoying its health benefits. Yoga can hardly be called a trend. Most Westernized yoga classes focus on learning physical poses, which are called asanas. They also usually include some form of breathing technique and possibly a meditation technique as well.

Here are some tips to help you reduce your risk of injury from yoga:
If you are pregnant or have a pre-existing health condition: Consult your health care provider before starting a yoga program. Your health care provider can help you know how to judge what type and level of yoga exercise is safe for you.
Don't try learning yoga on your own. Work with an experienced and credentialed instructor to learn the proper way to perform the exercises and avoid injury.
Yoga is not a substitute for medical care. Yoga offers many health benefits and may even be included as part of some treatment plans. But it's still important to work closely with your regular health care providers and get proper treatment when you need it.
Know your limits and stay within them. Before beginning any new type of yoga, ask about its physical demands. Find out how strenuous it is. Talk with the instructor and others who do that type of yoga to be sure it's suitable for you.
Go slow. You're not in competition with anyone else in the class. Learn the basics, such as proper breathing and how to maintain balance, before you attempt the more ambitious stretches.
Warm up properly before every session. Cold muscles increase your chance of injury.
Wear proper clothing. Wear clothes that allow you to move freely.
Ask questions. If you don't understand an exercise, ask to see it again before you attempt it yourself,
Stay hydrated. That's especially important if you are practicing what's called "hot" yoga, which is done in a very warm and humid room.
Pay attention to what your body is telling you. Yoga isn't supposed to hurt. If you feel pain, stop. If the pain persists, see your health care provider. Stop immediately if you have chest pain, feel faint or overheated, or become dizzy. Get immediate medical help if the sensation continues after you stop.

MAGNESIUM

                                    MAGNESIUM

Lack of magnesium in the human body affects the central nervous system, more so when it is combined with a lack of calcium as both the minerals work together.

Conditions Related to Low Magnesium:

1. Depression
2. Insomnia
3. Migraines
4. Premenstrual syndrome
5. Hypertension
6. Chronic Fatigue Symptoms
7. Muscle Spasms and Twitches
8. Anxiety, Restlessness and Hyperactivity
9. Constipation
10.  Heart palpitations
11.  Tightness in the chest
12.  Osteoporosis

There are a few questions you can ask yourself as a self assessment:

Do you drink too many colas or carbonated drinks on a regular basis? Dark sodas have phosphates and these bind with magnesium in the digestive tract - they are flushed out. Avoid having cola with meals as this will flush out all the magnesium you are eating.

Have a sweet tooth? Do you eat a lot of candies, cakes and pastries? Refined sugar and refined flour have no magnesium. Nutritionists believe sugar is an anti nutrient.

Is your stress level very high - or have you undergone a surgery? Severe stress depletes magnesium and deficit magnesium in turn causes stress.

How much caffeine do you imbibe - in coffee, tea etc? Caffeine causes kidneys to excrete magnesium and other minerals.

How much of alcohol do you have - more than 7 drinks a week? Alcohol decreases the efficiency of the digestive system and absorption of vitamin D - which are responsible for magnesium deficiency.

Are you having too much of calcium - in milk or supplements? Excessive calcium with low magnesium is harmful for cells and muscles.

Do you take medication like - birth control pills, diuretics, heart medication or estrogen replacement? Some drugs lower magnesium levels in the system as magnesium is flushed out.

Do you face any of the neurological signs like anxiety, insomnia, or hyperactivity? Magnesium maintains electrolyte balance and deficiency can cause depression.

Do you have spasms, cramps, tics and fibromyalgia? When magnesium in the body is not adequate, muscles contract all the while.

Are you above 55years? After this age and as you grow older a person is vulnerable to loss of magnesium. The metabolic rates slow down as does the absorption of minerals - supplements are very important.

There are also a few random symptoms to indicate magnesium deficiency, such as when a normally relaxed and easy going person becomes short tempered and pessimistic. Some people develop a craving for salt or chocolate.

Magnesium is a key to good health; it should not be under estimated. Symptoms of magnesium deficiency can be confused with symptoms of other conditions. It would be wise to see a physician and undergo some tests before increasing magnesium levels. Vitamin B complex taken along with magnesium supplements controls the amount of mineral absorbed into cells.

GHEE

                                                   GHEE

For decades now - clarified butter or ghee is an essential part of Indian cooking. It is widely used in religious ceremonies and in Ayurvedic medicines. There has been a lot of research and debate on whether Ghee is directly or indirectly the cause of heart disease. Ghee is to Indians what butter and margarine is to Americans. Ghee is also known as "drawn butter."

When butter is melted over a low heat and all the water has been allowed to evaporate while the milk protein forms a solid mass at the bottom of the pan. The pale yellow liquid thus got is ghee or clarified butter. It has a very high smoking point and a nutty flavor.

Ups:

For people who are allergic to lactose and cannot tolerate butter - ghee is a good choice as all the milk proteins are burned away. It does not have any hydrogenated oils so it is free of trans- fats and preservatives.

Even today ghee plays an important role in ayurvedic remedies and medicine. During the early days when science had yet to develop creams for burns and blisters, ghee was applied and proved to be a cooling effect on the burns and blisters.

It is believed that ghee stimulates the secretion of stomach acids and thus aids indigestion. Ghee is known to prevent the formation of ulcers and prevents constipation. Using ghee in our diet encourages good skin and healthy eyes.

It is said to be beneficial in an improved memory and ability to learn. Ghee has a number of anti oxidants which help in strengthening the immune system and retards ageing.

Ghee is used externally as a massage medium and helps alleviate dry skin and arthritis and removes toxins from tissues.

Ghee does not turn rancid while cooking due to its high smoke point that is between 400 - 500 degrees F. It does not need refrigeration as it has a very long shelf life.

Downs:

As we all know that ghee has large amounts of saturated fat, so used in excess can lead to high cholesterol resulting in heart problems. 4 teaspoons of butter constitute 1 teaspoon of ghee. It has to be used prudently, moderately and wisely to gain all the benefits one can, from this pale yellow liquid gold.

Your toothpaste may cause cancer........

Your toothpaste may cause cancer........

A study finds nicotine dental products contain nicotine.
Next time you brush your teeth, be careful. Some popular toothpastes and toothpowders in India have high levels of nicotine, a known carcinogen, a study has found.
Researchers at the Delhi Institute of Pharmaceutical Sciences and Research (DIPSAR) tested 10 toothpowders and 24 toothpastes brands. They found large amounts of nicotine in 11 of these non-tobacco products.
The highest amount of nicotine at 18 milligram/gram (mg/g) was found in Colgate Herbal products while 10 mg/g of nicotine was found in Neem Tulsi brand.

“Nicotine content in one cigarette is between two and three mg/g. In one of the dental care products we found the nicotine content was equivalent to that of nine cigarettes."
According to the Cigarette and Other Tobacco Products Act, 2003, no non-tobacco product can contain tobacco and nicotine.
Earlier studies have found tobacco and nicotine in toothpowders. But this is the first study that has found nicotine in toothpastes.
In a study published in the British Medical Journal in 2004 Gupta stated that various tobacco products are used as dentrifice in India.
“Many companies take advantage of a misconception widely prevalent in India that tobacco is good for teeth." A laboratory test of five samples of red tooth powder that did not declare tobacco as an ingredient found tobacco content of 9.3-248 mg/g of tooth powder, the study stated.
Nicotine in the toothpastes and toothpowders gets absorbed in the body when it directly comes in contact with the skin. This makes the product addictive.
